The T20 format is the shortest version of cricket and depends a lot on strong hitters who can attack bowlers aggressively. Even though this approach can be very effective, only a few batsmen can score runs easily and consistently in T20 matches. This is because T20 cricket requires a special mindset, skills, and technique, as players don’t have much time to settle in.
Here are the top five batsmen who have played at least 40 innings and have the highest averages in T20 internationals (T20Is):
1. Virat Kohli – 50.80
This is probably the least surprising name on the list. Virat Kohli is a special player who performs well in all formats of the game.
He excels in T20 cricket just like he does in other formats. Kohli made his T20 debut against Zimbabwe in 2010, and since then, he has been unstoppable. In 76 innings, the Indian captain has scored 2,794 runs with an impressive average of 50.80.
2. JP Duminy – 38.68
JP Duminy was one of South Africa’s most thrilling players in T20 cricket. Although he played in all formats, he was especially great in T20 matches.
Duminy first played in the ICC World T20 in 2007 against Bangladesh. He opened the batting with captain Graeme Smith and was crucial to South Africa’s success. In his 75 T20 international innings, Duminy scored 1,934 runs, averaging 38.68 runs per game.
3. Aaron Finch – 38.25
Aaron Finch is a powerful and aggressive opening batsman for Australia. He and David Warner form one of the most dangerous batting pairs in cricket.
Finch’s impressive performances in T20 matches helped him earn a spot in Australia’s top ODI team. In 61 T20 games, he has scored 1989 runs with a great average of 38.25, including two centuries and twelve half-centuries.
4. MS Dhoni – 37.60
From the first time people saw MS Dhoni play, it looked like T20 cricket was made for him. He played his first T20 match against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium in 2006, but he got out without scoring any runs after just two balls. Despite this, Dhoni went on to play 98 T20 matches for India, scoring 1617 runs with an average of 37.60.
5. Brendon McCullum – 35.67
Brendon McCullum, a former captain of New Zealand’s cricket team, is one of the top wicket-keeper batsmen from New Zealand. He is famous for his outstanding batting in T20 cricket. McCullum was the first player to score 1,000 runs in T20 cricket. He played 70 T20 matches for New Zealand, scoring more than 2,000 runs with a strong average of 35.67, including two centuries.
